How to Choose an Energy Supplier (Without Getting Burned)

How to choose an energy supplier

How do you know which energy supplier is right for your business?

How do you know you’re getting the best energy rate, the best contract, and most importantly, how do you avoid getting burned when shopping for lower energy rates or choosing an energy supplier?

In today’s article, I want to discuss how to choose an energy supplier and explain a few fundamentals that any business should consider when renewing its energy contract or looking for competitive energy rates.

What is Energy Deregulation?

In states with a deregulated energy market, businesses have the option to choose their energy supplier as opposed to having to buy their energy supply from the local utility.

In deregulated states, the local utility is still responsible for delivering electricity to homes and businesses. They maintain the poles, wires, transformers, and infrastructure that keep power flowing. The electricity itself, however, can be purchased either from the utility or from a retail energy supplier — and that’s where the option to choose comes in (watch this video to find out which states are deregulated energy states).

Often referred to as Energy Choice, this state-level program is one of the most overlooked advantages in a deregulated energy market.

When utilized correctly, it unlocks significant energy savings, protection against energy market volatility and energy price increases, and provides genuine financial stability.

Yet, for many businesses, the idea of comparing energy suppliers and selecting the best rate and energy plan can feel overwhelming.

While the competition between the local utility and retail energy suppliers is beneficial for businesses shopping for lower energy rates, there are often many energy suppliers to choose from, various rate options, multiple plans and contract terms, and different structures.

At first glance, it may feel complicated and some business owners choose to stick with the local utility instead.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that the goal of the Energy Choice program (or energy deregulation) is actually quite simple:

To give consumers and businesses the freedom to choose their energy supplier, creating competition that leads to better energy pricing, contract options, and more control over energy costs.

And that’s the key point for businesses to understand — energy procurement is not just about lowering the electric bill or finding a lower energy rate. It’s about creating control over energy costs and avoiding increasing energy costs over a longer period of time.

When you take the time to shop for the best energy supplier, find the most competitive energy rate, and an energy contract that fits your business goals, you gain control.

You gain the ability to stabilize your energy budget, can plan more accurately, and protect your bottom line from energy market spikes and rate hikes.

That’s a strategic advantage and the benefits of the Energy Choice program

But knowing that and knowing how to choose an energy supplier are two different things.

Why Choosing an Energy Supplier Can Feel Overwhelming

Now, let’s take a second to look at what it takes to choose an energy supplier.

If you’ve ever tried to compare energy rates yourself, you’ve likely noticed very quickly just how time-consuming the process can be.

To do it thoroughly, you would need to:

  • Contact multiple energy suppliers individually
  • Send each energy supplier copies of your energy bills and usage history
  • Request customized pricing and wait for quotes.
  • Then, contact the most competitive energy suppliers to try and negotiate better rates.

After that, you would need to interpret different pricing structures, calculate the cost savings over the entire contract term, and then review the contract language to ensure the proposed energy rate is in fact fixed and not tied to a portion of the market or is not an introductory rate that later increases with time.

All of this assumes you even have the time to do that — and most companies simply don’t.

And that’s why many businesses end up either sticking with the energy rate they currently have, sticking with the local utility, or choosing whatever energy rate is offered by their existing energy supplier (or energy broker).

And that’s where businesses sometimes get burned, not because the market is unfair but because the process is unclear, time-consuming, and sometimes a little confusing.

But remember, the goal of Energy Choice is not only to choose an energy supplier, but also to leverage the energy deregulation to find competitive energy rates, better contract terms, and an energy supplier that aligns with your business strategy and energy goals.

The Advantage of Choosing the Right Energy Supplier

The advantage of Energy Choice isn’t simply about finding the lowest price and lowering your electric bill, although that is definitely one of the benefits.

Energy Choice is also about how to choose an energy supplier that is right for your business. It’s about finding a rate and corresponding energy supply agreement that aligns with your business’s operational needs and long-term energy goals.

When you look beyond just the numbers on the page and consider how the energy rate is structured, how it compares to the existing and future energy market, what the energy contract allows your business to do (and what its limitations are), you gain the ability to shape your energy costs in a way that benefits your future business planning.

For example, let’s say you plan to move to a new location in 6 months, or expand and open a new facility in the next 12-24 months that will double your energy usage, or perhaps you plan to switch your vehicle fleet to electric vehicles.

If you choose the right energy supplier and a suitable contract, it will benefit you and provide for all your needs.

For many businesses, this “how to choose the right energy supplier” begins with choosing a fixed rate agreement, where the energy supply rate you choose remains the same for the entire contract term.

In simpler terms, it means your energy rate – the rate you pay for the energy you use – isn’t affected by weather-driven demand spikes, changing fuel prices, heat waves, cold snaps, political turmoil, or seasonal fluctuations.

With a stable and predictable energy rate, you can forecast, budget, and plan with confidence.

But predictability is only one part of the advantage. Choosing the right energy supplier also helps your business:

  • Control long-term energy costs by locking in pricing when market conditions are favorable
  • Avoid unexpected bill swings caused by energy market volatility or utility rate hikes that can disrupt budgets
  • Match contract terms to operational timelines such as lease renewals, production cycles, or expansion plans
  • Gain access to cleaner, renewable energy, or strategically sourced energy when desired
  • Streamline energy billing and energy account management, especially for multi-site or multi-meter operations
  • Secure energy contract terms and choose an energy supplier that protects your interests
  • Use market intelligence to time decisions, rather than reacting after prices move

This is where energy procurement shifts from being a routine bill payment into a strategic financial advantage. It’s no longer just “shopping for cheaper electricity,” It’s smart planning for your business.

Now, let’s discuss a few key factors that influence the decision on choosing an energy supplier. To start with, and to give you a good example of how this works, I have included a short video that shows you how we, at Energy Professionals, do it:

Timing and Strategy Matter

Energy prices fluctuate throughout the year and across market cycles.

Sometimes, the energy market is low and stable, and securing a longer-term energy contract with an energy supplier can provide protection for your business for years to come.

At other times, the energy market can be volatile or elevated, and shorter-term energy contracts from a reliable energy supplier may be more suitable to maintain flexibility.

There is no universal “right term” — the right choice is the one that aligns with current energy market conditions and your business’s energy usage and future planning.

And, when you choose the right energy supplier, this becomes one of the most effective ways to create resilience against future price increases.

Clarity Prevents Problems

The best energy supply agreements are straightforward and clear.

You should be able to read the contract from your energy supplier and clearly understand several key points:

  • What the energy rate is
  • Whether the energy rate is fixed or tied to the market (fixed energy rates are generally recommended unless the market is in an upswing or is uncertain)
  •  The duration of your agreement (in other words, how long are you guaranteed the fixed energy rate)
  • What happens if circumstances change? For example, what happens if you suddenly start using less or more energy than you usually do? What happens if you have to close down a location? What happens if you open two new locations, and so on?

If an energy agreement reads smoothly when explained in plain language, that’s almost always a sign of a solid contract and a good energy supplier.

If you find yourself re-reading sections to figure out what they mean, that’s usually where risk hides.

Clarity is your protection.

Transparency is your advantage.

After all, the Energy Choice program is designed to empower you — the consumer — so that you can get the best deal for your business.

How to Choose an Energy Supplier: Making the Process Easier (and Smarter)

The real power in energy procurement comes from letting competition work on your behalf.

When multiple energy suppliers are given the same information and asked to provide energy pricing simultaneously, your business gains leverage.

You’re no longer calling one energy supplier at a time, gathering scattered quotes, and trying to compare disconnected numbers.

Instead, you are creating an organized process where energy prices and contract terms can be evaluated side by side.

This approach not only saves time — it also ensures fairness, transparency, and confidence in the final decision.

So, how do you choose the right energy supplier for your business?

As you can now see, choosing an energy supplier is not simply about finding the lowest rate.

It’s about using your ability to choose as a strategic business advantage. When you approach the process with clarity, timing, and structured comparison, you gain stability — and stability is one of the most valuable assets a business can have.

When done correctly, you don’t just “shop for electricity.”

You create consistency.

You create predictability.

You protect your budget.

And most importantly, you do it without getting burned.

However, here’s the good news: you don’t have to go through this alone.

If you want to learn more about Energy Choice or have an existing energy contract that is expiring and want to find new rates, it can be helpful to discuss it with someone who works with this every day.
