Which Countries Use The Most Energy?

When we review net energy consumption by country, the top positions seem to parallel population. Countries with the highest population, such as China (1.4B), India (1.3B) and the U.S (330M) coincidentally also lead the charts in terms of overall energy consumption; with demand for more energy increasing.

Accounting for 24% of global energy consumption and with the fastest rate of global energy consumption growth for 18 consecutive years, China, the worlds most populated country and one of the world’s largest exporters consumes the most energy.

The United States, with a considerably smaller population, broke all previous energy consumption records in 2018 by consuming 101 quadrillion BTUs, a 4% increase from 2017 and a .3% increase over the previous 2007 consumption record.

According to the global reporting firm Statista, behind the U.S come Russia and India then Japan, Canada, Germany, South Korea and Brazil, to name the top countries.

U.S. Energy Consumption Overview

The above graph shows a steadily increasing demand for energy over the past fifty years. While some predictions show that 2020 and 2021 will level out, there is no doubt that with continued population growth and overall U.S. production increase, the demand for energy will continue to energy demands will continue to build.
