Let me start this article by asking you a very important question:

How much time a day do you spend thinking about ways to reduce your energy bills?

My guess is that it’s not something you think about THAT often. Maybe once a month when you need to pay your bills, if even that.

Well, guess what, that’s all we think about at Energy Professionals!

You could say that we’re basically completely obsessed with finding ways to reduce your energy bill!

We love finding ways for you to pay less money for your electricity and natural gas, finding ways to protect you against increasing energy prices, figure out how your company can use less energy without forgiving important business matters, and we love to help strategize how to make your business more sustainable by taking advantage of green energy – see, I told you, we’re obsessed!

As energy becomes more and more important to our world, a lot of people ask, “what does an Energy Consultant do?”

What Is The Difference Between an Energy Broker and an Energy Consultant?

To start with, I wanted to consume a few paragraphs to differentiate between an Energy Broker and an Energy Consultant.

Since states first started deregulating energy broker agencies have been helping homes and business take advantage of energy choice by finding new energy suppliers with better rates.

Also check out: How Does Energy Deregulation Work?

That’s what an Energy Broker does, an Energy Broker helps you find lower energy rates by contacting a retail energy supplier that services your utility zone. Energy Brokers usually show up when your energy contract is expiring, to help you find new rates.

But energy solutions go far beyond “finding the best rate”. Some businesses aren’t located in deregulated states and even businesses in deregulated states still have many ways of using less energy, becoming more sustainable, and overall reducing energy costs – hence Energy Consultants!

An Energy Consultant takes an all-inclusive approach to energy management by

  • Tracking the market and identifying the best times to buy energy.
  • Helping you locate areas of opportunities that will help you reduce usage, and costs, such as demand response programs, and
  • Help you with energy efficiency and renewable energy projects, such as LED lighting, HVAC restoration, and solar.

Let’s take the subject of “finding better energy rates” as an example.

Energy procurement can be pretty complex.

For example, did you know that when we find the best energy rates for your business there are actually five factors that make up that price?

  • Wholesale energy prices
  • Capacity charges
  • NITS
  • Ancillary charges, and
  • Line loss

Energy Consultants don’t just find you the lowest price for your energy, but we take into account all factors of the energy buying process to ensure you’re getting the option that fits your business’ energy needs.

Energy contracts can have various clauses that could result in additional charges and hefty fees. We not only lookout for these and explain to you your options, but make the entire energy buying easy, and make energy an area of opportunity when it comes to reducing expenses and making your business more profitable.

And should you find yourself with a problem, we help you solve it acting almost like an arbitrator between you and your energy supplier.

To become an Energy Consultant can take a lot of training.

Some of our staff have been certified by Schneider Electric’s Energy University, a very rigorous program that can take over 12 months to complete resulting in a Professional Energy Manager Certification.

How Do Energy Consultants Get Paid?

Another question I get asked a lot is “how do you guys get paid?”

Because most of our consulting services are completely free for the client.

Well, in most cases we – Energy Consultants – get paid by suppliers directly.

At Energy Professionals, we have built long term relationships with most of the top retail energy suppliers in America. And having been in business for over 20 years, as one of the original Energy Consulting companies, we have buying power that helps us find you the most competitive rates on the market.

I hope that you found this article informative and helpful to better understand what an Energy Consultant does.
